CENTENARY AQUATIC CENTRE Completed 1996
Gregory Terrace, Spring Hill Qld VALUE: $3 million PROJECT TYPE: Leisure JOB: Develop, Design & Construct CLIENT: Brisbane City Council DESCRIPTION: In 1994 the Brisbane City Council decided to upgrade and improve the public pool facilities at the heritage listed Centenary Swimming Pool complex.
The Council called for ideas from the business community and Stockwell proposed a complete refurbishment and further development on a dollar to dollar basis in exchange for a long term lease.
The existing pools, changerooms and old restaurant were refurbished and a further 1,000m² of leasable commercial floor space was constructed. Council stipulated that the free form art deco style building had to be preserved and the new development was designed around the old.
Stockwell put together a financial model to solve the ongoing cash and maintenance problems. This proved challenging as banks had a problem coming to terms with long term leasehold developments.
